How We Recognize Life Events

Music has played and important role in our church since the very early years of this congregation. As mentioned in our history, The Universalist Church acquired a pipe organ, the first in Rochester, in 1889.

Recent history is traced back through the tenure of Music Director, Orvis Ross who served from the late 1940's to the early 1970's. Mr. Ross had a profound effect on the music program through his active participation as choral director, organist, pianist, composer and teacher. Many original works were written for individual members as well as for church services.

These shared events are remembered by our senior members and lend us a vital part of our church's cherished history.

Merrill N. Davis served as director of music from the early 1970's to 1984. Under Mr. Davis's leadership, the church rallied support for the purchase of three outstanding instruments housed in the sanctuary. The spectacular Hendrickson tracker organ was built from a major gift of Mary Kahler Hench. The grand piano (since replaced with a new Yamaha grand) was purchased through the gifts of dozens of individuals and families of the congregation. The Flemish-style harpsichord was built by members of the congregation and remains the finest instrument of its kind in our area.

Kevin Dobbe became music director in 1984. He continued the tradition of an active music program with the Walden Hill Vocal Ensemble which is still the name of our choir. Kevin also initiated the UU Youth Choir, the UU Hand bell Choir, and the Young Musicians program. He also composed the "Children's Benediction" which is still used in our services when children leave the sanctuary and go to their classrooms on intergenerational service Sundays.

Laurie Helmers became the music director in the early 1990's. Laurie's enthusiasm and creativity continued the long tradition of excellence in our music programs. Her love of musicals and show tunes also enlivened many of our social gatherings.

Over the past several years, Joe Mish has directed our music programs and this year, Connie Schuelka joined Joe as the Co-Director of Music. Together they have strengthened what was already a strong music program and their commitment to music in worship is evident each Sunday.

In addition to a strong history of Directorship, our congregation has many excellent musician members and friends who provide music for our worship services and other events. Guest artists perform at many services every year and the congregation enjoys the interesting variety and performance excellence. The sanctuary of our church is widely known for its exemplary acoustics and it is known to be a favorite venue for recitals and other performances.

Music is integral to our worship services. The minister and the music directors work together to integrate music into the flow and the theme. When one of the choirs perform, they select music that will enhance the message. The church maintains an excellent music library and we are just completing a successful drive to acquire the new hymnal supplement, "Singing the Journey" for our congregation.
